Trouble with the scanner...

While I am happy with the new Nikon D40 most of what I consider to be my best shots were taken with my 30+ year old
Canon AE-1. Unfortunately I am having some difficulty with my scanner and I'm getting very frustrated with it. It is a Canon scanner. Is there anybody out there who has mastered the scanner who has time to explain how to scan color photographs? They aren't coming out as nice as I would like.
